Coping with stress and burnout in the workplace: Results from the StressOut project
In recent years, workplace stress has become one of the biggest challenges for employee health. More than half of employees in Europe report experiencing daily stress caused by tight deadlines, high workload, job insecurity, long working hours, and lack of control over work processes.
In the context of this pressing problem, a project “StressOut: Modern tools for managing stress in the workplace” emerged as a timely initiative under the EU's Erasmus+ programme, with the aim of providing employers and employees with innovative and practical tools for preventing and managing stress and burnout in the workplace. Over the past two and a half years, the StressOut project has managed to engage over 900 people, including employees, employers, experts and local authorities, through its activities and results, to create solutions that truly meet the real needs of modern workplaces.
One of the most valuable achievements of the project is the StressOut training course, developed after a year of research, expert consultations and collaboration between partners. The course aims to help people recognize, prevent and manage stress in their workplace, offering both theoretical knowledge and practical techniques that can be applied directly in daily work. The course includes 27 topics, carefully structured into 5 main modules:
- Let's talk about stress: A theoretical introduction to stress and burnout;
- Prevention is the best intervention: preventing work-related stress and burnout;
- Who to turn to? Finding help in managing work-related stress and burnout;
- Take a Breath: Techniques and Methods for Stress Relief and Relaxation;
- Be the best version of yourself: Key approaches to caring for your well-being.
Another important result of the project implementation is The StressOut Policy Recommendations Report, which explains the causes and effects of stress and burnout across Europe. Based on data from a survey of over 500 participants, 12 focus groups and an analysis of the regulatory framework, the report not only analyses the current situation but also provides concrete policy proposals to reduce stress in the workplace, support employee well-being and promote coordinated action across the EU.
In addition, the project also developed Guide for employers – a practical resource offering clear and accessible guidance on recognizing, preventing and managing stress and burnout in organizations. The guide covers topics such as organizational culture, leadership, workload planning, employee engagement and corporate well-being strategies. The guide also includes interactive exercises and real-life case studies, making it a valuable tool for managers who want to apply their knowledge in a real-world setting.
To provide support to people in times when stress becomes unbearable, the partnership has created First aid kit StressOut, which provides practical advice and immediate support in severe cases of stress, self-help strategies, and concrete steps to regain calm in challenging situations.
Recognizing the importance of raising awareness about stress in an easy and accessible way, the project was launched and podcast series "Let's Talk About Stress". The episodes explore the causes and science behind stress, along with experts in the field who provide plenty of practical advice on managing stress. With its accessible format and real-world strategies, the podcast aims to help people take proactive steps towards better mental well-being, while also opening up the topic of stress in the workplace.
The culmination of all the efforts of the project partners is the StressOut mobile app, which brings together all the project's resources in one convenient platform. Accessible anytime, anywhere, the app offers educational content, podcasts, exercises and much more, making stress management easy and engaging. Completely free, with no ads or limitations, the app is available for both iOS, and for Android devices, allowing users to take control of their mental well-being in the way that is most convenient for them.
All of the above results can be found in the Resources section of the official website of the project, as well as in the StressOut mobile app.
